Creating a Bedroom Oasis

Whether you’re taking calls from home these days or you’re finally getting back into an office work schedule, we can all agree that the bedroom is the ultimate relaxation station after putting those hours in. The bedroom can be considered your own personal haven at the end of the day; a place to retreat, cozy up with your significant other and catch up on your z’s. That’s why making it a comfortable and inviting living space is essential.

If it’s been more difficult to unwind in your bedroom after a long day, perhaps it’s time to switch things up. Making changes to the foundation of the space with a new design layout, as well as paying attention to the small details in decor, can make a big difference in the way the room looks — and more importantly, how you feel.

Ready to change it up? If you’re interested in achieving a retreat-feel in your personal living space, consider the following tips:

  1. Try a new furniture layout

Your bedroom furniture doesn’t have to be pushed up against the wall; this may be a traditional or popular option, but it can leave you with the center of the room bare. If your bed is in a corner, try moving it to the center of the biggest wall. This will give the room a symmetrical focal point, and give your sleeping area a more spacious feel. You can also make the room feel fresh and new by adding a new set of bedside tables now that you have the room for two.

If you have a desk or work out equipment in your bedroom, it may be best to find a different place in your home to use those pieces. This may be a spare bedroom or a basement. Having pieces that remind you tasks to be done can impede your ability to relax in a space meant for resting. This may also allow you to fit a small seating area. This could be a bench, a chaise, an accent chair or two. This is the perfect way to increase the functionality of the space by giving you a spot to wind down at the end of the day or enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning.

  1. Switch out your bedding based on the season

When was the last time you invested in a new comforter, pillow shams and throw blankets to decorate the bed? Many people choose one set of bedding and have not thought to change it on a regular basis. However, if you really want to mix things up and refresh your bedroom multiple times throughout the year, you can upgrade your bedding so it flows with the season.

In the fall and winter months, you can opt for flannel sheets and heavy a bed topping such as a duvet for maximum warmth. In the spring and summer, you can exchange the bulky bedding for lighter options like a quilt and some cotton sheets. If your bedroom is fairly neutral, you can even choose a brighter color scheme for the spring and summer and a deeper color palette for the fall and winter.

  1. Evaluate the current color scheme

Speaking of color.. coziness comes in different forms for many people, and this holds especially true when you’re choosing a color scheme. In addition to changing bedding, wall paint, rugs, window treatments, and other accessories can be used to change your color story.  For some, this means dark, bold shades that bring a romantic vibe to the room.  Deep jewel tones such as garnet, plum, and sapphire can evoke that intimate feel. Likewise dark neutrals can bring an elegant drama to the space while also creating an instinctually cozy place to fall into slumber.

On the other hand, a light color scheme can make the bedroom feel larger and more light and airy. A room dosed in shades of white with pastel or muted colors cascaded with natural lighting creates the ideal spot for a quick afternoon wind down with a book in hand.
